Geri - the "little green alien"
Welcome to Geri Nicosia, kart racer!
Geri reached the milestone age of 8 on 11 June 2007, milestone because this is the age he was first allowed out on track at the local indoor kart centre Rogue Racing in Aylesbury.
Having been dragged around race tracks by his father since he was one year old, it was hardly surprising that Geri had been waiting for this day for years. Under Klub Kart Racing rules, Geri had to attend a Wednesday afternoon session after school where he would be introduced to the kart and the circuit. The circuit operative explained how the pedals worked, walked the attendees round the track and explained the concept of lines, as well of course as the safety regulations.
Geri took to karting like a fish to water although his first sessions were a little apprehensive. But nothing that regular practice couldn't put right. So began a run of weekly visits to the karting centre and surely enough, the lap times came down in leaps and bounds. A rewards scheme was devised, it was important that Geri was fast before having his own helmet, race suit, etc. A 29 second lap soon earned Geri a pair of gloves, the next target was set at 27.5 seconds and took a few weeks longer - that earned Geri a helmet of his own. Because of his age, and more importantly, being just marginally above the 1.3m minimum height, Geri wore little green overalls where most of the children at the centre were taller and raced in red overalls. In the same way that Lewis Hamilton always wore a yellow helmet so his father could spot him, so Geri stood out as the only "little green alien" on the track!
By August, just six weeks after his first try in a kart, Rogue Racing commenced a Junior Grand Prix series in which Geri entered every round and finished in second place overall for 2007, finally winning a round outright in December. On his last outing of 2007, on a cold Sunday morning, Geri once again reduced his lap time around the Aylesbury circuit, finishing with a 2007 best of 26.79 seconds. Plans are afoot to progress Geri's karting in 2008 - watch this space!
