26th June:
Geri completes his first race weekend at the fearsome Cadwell Park - read the race report here.
1st April:
Geri passed his ARDS test at Brands Hatch today - his licence has been applied for and he is now officially a race car driver. Roll on June when he can debut at Cadwell Park - although we hope to get some seat time in the Nyssa Racing Fiesta ST before then.
31st March:
An update - once we found Geri had outgrown the Honda Cadet kart (a matter of weight after a growth spurt), we abandoned 2011 and started planning for a season in Mini Max for 2012. We had hoped to get a trial run before committing to ordering, but after a couple of delays and trying to arrange the loan of a kart elsewhere, Geri broke his arm playing football. Six weeks out of football, Geri's season couldn't have started before May. We took stock of the situation and decided rather than spend vast money and effort for half a season and then probably moving up to Junior Max, we would abandon karting in favour of racing cars.
There are three main series for car racing aimed at junior drivers 14-16 years old. Top of the tree, at least in visibility terms would be the Ginetta Junior seroes which runs on the BTCC card. A number of races are shown live on ITV4 but the budget required to partake looked scary, even more so for an unknown quantity such as Geri. At the bottom end of the market is the SaxMax championship racing Citroen Saxo 8v cars. Certainly buying an existing SaxMax car looked to be reasonably cheap, cheaper than buying a Mini Max kart outfit, but then we went to watch the Fiesta Junior series. The cars looked much safer than the Citroen Saxo cars, the juniors essentially run the same Fiesta ST race cars as the adults do, but with a specified roll cage, seat, harness, mandatory HANS device and have niceties such as power steering and a lot more power. The cars didn't look cheap, but the actual costs of racing didn't look so different from SaxMax, so we have picked the Fiesta Junior series for Geri for 2013. He will not be 14 until June so will have to join the season at round 4. We at Nyssa Racing are building the car for Geri to race in. An advantage of going down this path is that the Fiesta Junior car is eligible for the Fiesta ST series with just a change of wheels and tyres, so we hope to double up in some races this season.
