Honda Cadet event at Rye House - 2011
7th August:
Geri was back at Rye House for the August event, complete with new rebuilt engine from UFO which showed a gain of 0.3bhp from the "before" power run, and a curve that sat a little higher all the way along. It was still not a top engine, but should be considered as an OK engine. After our trials last time out, we had managed to fit a plate by the engine switch to ensure Geri could not urn it off without leaving the kart. We also managed to engage Steve Cutting's team to look after us for the weekend. And finally, we tested on the race Saturday rather than a separate weekend as we have been doing.
We arrived on the Saturday to find the Honda Cadets would go out in the final session of each hour, so we had reasonable time in which to get ready before sending Geri out to get in some laps. We were disappointed to see that the extra power wasn't really showing and at the end of the session brought Geri back in so Steve's team to look over the kart. One of the first things that was spotted was that Geri's steering was heavier than most and tracking left a lot to be desired. Small changes were made throughout the day, and while Geri's lap times improved, nothing really seemed to make much of a leap and his best time of 43.03s was still short of his previous best. The bumper and side pods were loosened off, and finally a brand new set of slicks was fitted - Geri's tyres were a year old. But still nothing really worked.
We arrived back at circuit on Sunday morning to find Steve's team had been busy. The steering issue had been identified, the washer between frame and one of the stub axles was too big creating added friction. This had been fixed and the tracking reset - the steering was now finger light while the kart was on the trolley. Out on the 3 warm-up laps and Geri seemed able to hold with the karts around him, although the times were
still very slow.
Heat 1
Geri was drawn 12th on the grid, although after lining up was moved to 11th due to a non-starter. After the almost obligatory two false starts, Geri crossed the start line in 12th, but disaster struck at the first hairpin where he got caught up in an incident in front of him at the hairpin and lost 6 places. The order on the circuit was all awry, the novices at the back all made gains of around 10 places and the front three got away with a big gap back to the chasing pack. Karts 88 and 98 went off on the second lap so Geri moved up two places to 16th, two laps later he was up another place going past 78 (Kieran Walsh), but then fell back a place as the recovering kart 95 went past Geri on lap 5. With 5 laps to go, there was a 2.8 second gap back to James Beckwith (99) behind Geri, but James was slowly catching Geri. As they crossed the line the penultimate time, James was 0.03s behind Geri, going past into Stadium on the last lap putting Geri back to 17th as Geri finished 0.62s behind James
At the end of the race, Geri drove into the weigh station, he is now running at 109.5kgs, some 6.5kgs over the weight limit!

Heat 2
Drawn back in 20th place for this heat, Geri had it all to do. There was a crash coming out of Stadium leaving three karts in the wall - 56 was trying to get back on the circuit but seemed to be beached, 80 was a little further into the Esses and 78 was slightly further along. Geri had managed to avoid the melee in front of him and moved up to 12th place. And as has happened before when this happens and Geri comes out of it well, the red flags came out and the race was restarted. It is particularly frustrating that those involved in such an incident are given back their original positions for the restart - surely this encourages a banzai attitude knowing if you do get it badly wrong, you'll just be restarted in your original place?
From the restart, and back in 20th place, Geri made a good start, crossing the start line in 18th place and then slotting across to the right hand lane to take the inside line round Stadium. Although caught up in a queue of karts, this line kept out of trouble and Geri maintained position for the remainder of the lap, running just 0.3 behind the two karts in front of him. 24 and 74 both got by Geri on lap 2, a poor starting 56 moved back up on lap 3, and 95 got by on lap 4 putting Geri back to 22nd. On lap 5, 35 got by leaving Geri in 23rd where he remained to the end of the race. He seems to be losing ground at the second hairpin, we need to understand why. From the positive perspective, lap times overall were down on usual, and Geri finished less than 18 seconds off the lead.

Heat 3
In the old indoor racing days, Geri on pole meant Geri wins! But it is not working out the same outdoors - Geri did start the final heat on pole but needless to say that did not translate into a win. Geri did start on pole and although he crossed the line a fraction behind the other front row kart (Kieran Walsh - 78), he led into Stadium only to be overtaken on the way out by kart 54 - who would go on to win the heat. Kart 51 passed Geri at the end of the first lap, just reaching the finish line 0.06 ahead. Geri dropped two places on lap 2 as 16 and 27 got by, 27 just doing so before the finish line again. There was a train of karts behind Geri, but he was driving well and holding them off, no-one got by on lap 3, and only kart 58 got by on lap 4 as a new weakness came to light. We had warned Geri that he was vulnerable going into the hairpin as other karts would run down the inside of him and force him wide, now he was taking a more defensive line into the hairpin, he was slower coming out and could be passed on the exit of the hairpin.
Lap 5 was a tough one for Geri - after a lap of close attention, William Tregurtha, one of his old foes from Aylesbury, found a way past and was quickly followed by 56 and 81 - these were all front running karts and Geri was still in 9th place at the half way point. The next two laps saw Geri lose two places on each, being outdragged out of the hairpin and then out of the final corner before he had a stable lap eight with no-one getting by, and setting his fastest lap of the race.
On lap 9 a cluster of karts was following him and despite his attempts to defend at the hairpin, Geri was hit and spun around, losing a couple of seconds and 5 places as he regained momentum. Kart 35 just got by on the final lap, leaving Geri to finish 19th, just 15 seconds off the leader. If not for being hit into a spin on lap 9, the gap from the winner would have been more like 13 seconds. Despite the lap times still not looking that competitive, it was plain that Geri himself was more at home on the track and made it very difficult for anyone to get past him. The weight disadvantage is certainly not helping him, he is being passed too easily at the end of the long straights.

Final
Just like last time out for Geri, the rain started during the heats between his last round and the final. This time the rain was pretty heavy and there was little doubt that wet tyres and set up would be required, so we set about changing the kart over. We moved up from a 75 tooth sprocket (we thought we were running 74) to 76, moved the rear wheels in 10mm and the fronts right out and set the pressures very low! Geri would be starting from 23rd on the grid, and while we had little to lose by taking a tyre gamble, there was just too much standing water on the circuit, especially going into Pylon.
By the time the race started, it had stopped raining and the sun was coming out - but it was still a wet tyre track. Karts were sliding everywhere and it looked at first like Geri had gained a few places, but then he went off at hairpin, then went straight on at Pylon avoiding a couple of spinners and came back on the track 3rd last and already 25 seconds off the lead, and six seconds behind the next kart in front. Race over before lap 1 was complete, to all intent. Geri might be running at the back, but he doesn't give up easily, he chased after the kart in front, by the next lap the gap was down to 3 seconds, although another spin on lap 4 dropped him to outright last. Lap 5 he moved up to catch Kieran Welsh (78), just passing him after the start of lap 6, the same lap we lost another kart so Geri was back to 25th where unfortunately he remained for the rest of the race.
On the final lap, the leader was closing in fast on Geri, but Geri made it to the end without being lapped. He was more than a little upset that as he then drove his final lap, the winner overtook him (his race being over) and then slowed down in front of Geri. Not good form - and we believe it earned him a telling off.

After the race we had a discussion with Steve. It is his belief that Geri can drive to the standard required but his weight and his kart are making it difficult to prove this. He really needs to move up to Mini Max sooner rather than later, we shall have to see if this is a financial possibility. In the mean time, Steve will take Geri's kart apart and confirm the straightness (or otherwise) of the chassis and remove any weight possible without spending much money - the stickers will all be coming off as every little helps. Geri is also getting too tall for the kart and driving with his legs splayed, with barely enough clearance to turn the steering wheel. We have asked Steve to look into the costs to go Mini Max, we had already decided this was the probable path for 2012, but if it can be funded sooner, Geri needs to make that jump asap.
