Honda Cadet event at Rye House - 2011
1st May:
After a good test session a couple of weeks earlier, we were hopeful that Geri might prove a little more competitive. We weren't expecting to be front running, just more capable of staying with a few other karts and not fighting to not be last! But nothing seems to ever run smoothly for Geri, today would be little different.
The first issue, and one we still have no answer to, is that of weight. We've run farly close to minimum weight i9n recent months, being careful to keep the fuel level topped up to ensure compliance. After we removed 2kgs of ballast at the last test session, we thought things might be a little too close, so filled the fuel tank up before sending Geri out for his 3 practice laps. The shock came when we weighed him and the kart as he came back in - the minimum weight is 103kgs, Geri came in at 108kgs! Surely he cannot have put on this much weight - he has a new race suit for this month which may be a little heavier? And a new helmet complying to 2011 regs which is certainly lighter than the old one. We drained as much fuel as we could back out, but still couldn't get below 106kgs.
Heat 1:
Geri was drawn 24th for the first heat from 27 drivers, just 3 novices racing this weekend. So the first heat wasn't going to be an easy one. Geri had made a decent start, he passed 3 karts straight from the start and was looking to make some good progress - but it soon got a lot more difficult as Geri was hit from behind at the first hairpin, one of the other karts actually mounted the back of his kart. The exhaust kart was dented and there is a small mark on Geri's brand new helmet! This left 3 karts adrift as they were untangled, already the rest of the pack were long gone and Geri's race effectively wrecked.
Kart 74 which had also been involved in the crash managed to get past Geri on the second lap, Geri hung on gamely for 3 or 4 laps before 74 started to pull away. Geri was into the 43s from lap 4 and maintained good pace lowering his laps times down to 43.41 on lap 8. He finished 2 laps later 7 seconds adrift of 74, in 26th place, 32 seconds back from the leader but massively clear of the final kart who was lapped.
Not the best of starts then!

Heat 2:
From starting 24th in heat 1, to pole in heat 2! Geri's first pole position at Rye House. After a little word in the assembly area of how to run the pace lap, Geri did a great job of b unching up the pack coming into the last corner. What looked like a perfectly good start to all the spectators at the first corner proved not to be acceptable - and the karts were sent round again. Another blow for Geri who had crossed the start line in 2nd place - kart 55 on the front row out-accelerated hi, but Geri had tucked in behind going round the first corner and was still in second place coming out of the corner heading down to the hairpin - at which point the start was finally declared not good! So they went again - and this time Geri suffered. He was already back in 3rd place across the start line - and fifth going into the first corner. Despite having been told at the drivers' briefing that they were not to accelerate before the tramlines - Geri was already left before they got there and no-one bothered to declare this a false start. His luck was out again.
Geri certainly tried to hold his own, he was just 1.3 seconds off the lead after 1 lap, and lost just .49 seconds the following lap, losing just one more place. But just as it was looking good, it all went wrong. Geri got mugged at the hairpin, one kart went down the inside and five more followed through while Geri was kept outside. The following lap 4 more places were lost in similar fashion, and by lap 4 he was down to 14th, 5.5 seconds off the front. A good lap 5 saw Geri maintain his position before another mugging on lap 6 where he lost 4 more places. By the end of lap 10, Geri had fallen back to 19th place, the only consolation being the 42.89 final lap, his new fastest lap.

Heat 3:
Heat 3 and Geri was in the middle of the pack, 11th on the grid. One place was lost before the start-line, otherwise Geri held his own for the first lap before losing 5 places on the second lap. We have to figure a better line that defends going to the hairpin without slowing him! After that Geri was only losing a place or two each lap and was running consistently faster. On lap 6 Geri lowered his best time to 42.87. Still 1.5 seconds off the pace he needs to run at, but a big step in the right direction being .8 seconds fater than his previous best race lap which he is now beating more often than not.
Geri finished heat 3 in 21st place of 27, 22 seconds behind the leader.

Final:
Geri was to start the final in 24th place again - the first lap was scrappy with crashes here, crashes there and somehow Geri managed to get through relatively unscathed and gained a few places - and then his luck kicked in again as one kart flew off into the barriers and the race was red flagged. The karts all congregated at Pylon, one of the crashed karts was told to start at the back of the pack until his after complained so he was placed back in his original start position - after the karts had all been ordered up. This meant the karts behind were on the wrong side of the grid and had to swap over between Pylon and the start. And in the confusion Geri ended up being placed last by the marshalls!
3 karts didn't make the restart so that left Geri 24th, but of those, karts 80 and 88 at least should have been behind him from the start. 80 got by 88 and 46 on the first lap while Geri was stuck behind them. 80 had been consistently the slowest kart all day and maintained position 4th from last (21st) for 5 laps. On lap 4, 46 got by 88 which was where the breakthrough started. Both 46 and 88 passed 80 on lap 5 and Geri followed them through. Geri was half a second down, the following lap it was 1/4 second, then 1/10 as Geri finally passed 88 going into the first corner on lap 9 - up into 22nd place. By now Geri was 2.3 seconds behind 46 and although he gained a little the following lap, after that 46 was just that fraction faster most laps finishing 4 laps ahead of Geri after 18 laps.
